Has India Got Talent?

Wow, did not see this one coming. Really? Karaoke?

I know we’re all wannabe actors & singers in the shower but singing on video? I suppose I’m just out of touch. People have become so comfortable with sharing every aspect of their lives on social media that Karaoke isn’t really a stretch anymore. What’s a bit of social singing once you’ve lost your inhibitions?

An App called ‘Smule Sing!’ has grown from relative obscurity to gaining nearly 1.5% reach over the last one year. They’ve even got Patrick Howard (Lead singer of the band — Train) in their videos. You can sing to yourself or to others, get instant feedback, apply audio filters to sound better & video filters to look better (?). And people absolutely love it.

Here’s a review:
‘Loved it, Loved it, Loved it.. All the stars of the Universe, even one more star than that.. 👏 👏 👏 🙏. So happy for this application.. You guys give meaning to many Lives.. Stay Blessed and May God Almighty Shower Their Choicest Blessings On You Guys..’

May he indeed.

Strangely enough, ‘Gaao Bollywood & Hindi Karaoke’ isn’t doing all that well considering everything it offers is built for India. There’s even an element of social networking and dating built into the app.

Every time I see products like this take off — I realize what a dinosaur I’m becoming. At least with respect to trends and technology; what people will and will not do. How do consumer-facing companies even stay relevant when consumer choices change so fast? You could be ‘getting it’ at 25 and out of touch by 30. Facebook & Instagram had to copy nearly all of Snaps features just to keep users coming back.

With karaoke, for example: Is this something that Wynk should do? Or Saavn or Gaana? Should music streaming appsbe offering Karaoke to retain users?

More importantly, how will investors stay on top of trends if the business models of the future lie beyond their imagination?

Thanks for your time,
