India’s Data Usage Pattern

Soo… Hope all you guys had a nice long weekend (there’s another one around the corner). Isn’t it great how there are so many holidays in India. It’s no wonder that employers here don’t give any time off. Good luck to everyone building a startup, between investors who keep asking for updates and employees with this puja and that shaadi; when do you even build stuff? Anyway, enough about me.

The graph below is an over view of how Indians consume daily data quota in a day.

Funnily enough, internet usage on the mobile tends to increase as the day progresses. It’s least between the hours of 2 AM and 8 AM, but then steadily rises through the day.

There’s that post lunch peak, presumably people taking it easy, watching videos, ‘chatting’ and generally feeling lazy in the after lunch hours. By 4 PM they tend to get back to work and focus on that till about 6 PM.

Between then and 9pm things are generally muted. They only start picking up in the post dinner hours and presumably by 1 AM — most Indians are ready for bed.

Much of this sits well with what we already know, that people tend to browse the internet and consume content more in the evening than they do in the morning. Indians are also better workers in the 1st half of the day and get progressively more distracted as the day progresses.

I assume, the hours of maximum internet usage are also the best times to advertise for content related services and 10 AM — 2 PM is the best time to get your work done!

Thanks for your time,
