Messaging Apps: A rundown of Attrition rates

Yes of course, you all knew that WhatsApp would be the lowest. I’m not ignoring that google hangouts is slightly higher. It’s just that it comes pre loaded in to most phones so its not like you and I made an effort to download it.

WhatsApps achievement then is that it has become critical to our existence. No matter who you are — you need to have it on your phone to stay connected.

If you think of app downloads as a bell curve then WhatsApp is usually the first app that you’ll download when you purchase a new device. Its right there on the extreme right side of the curve. Before facebook, twitter, Instagram, PayTM or Uber — you’ll get WhatsApp on your phone.

How do we define attrition? The percentage of smart phones that had this app installed in the last 4 months but no longer do.

The real surprises in this list for me? Omlet & ShareChat.

Omlet is messaging company based on California that promises ‘Fun & Creative’ stickers and allows users to create photo albums together at a party. Although both of those features seem fairly trivial to me (I don’t do stickers) they’ve managed to find a very loyal customer base here in India.

I would’ve expected ShareChats Attrition to be way lower. Why? Because it’s become so central to so many people’s lives. Not as a medium of communication or anything but as a source of entertainment. People will find everything from ‘Bhagvad Gita Quotes’ to tips on how to lose weight. If you were ever wondering where all those forwards you get on WhatsApp comes from — this is it.

Thanks for your time,
