Not Just Google: Map Apps in India

MAgic Earth who ?

I hadn’t heard of it either. But in the last one year they’ve taken almost 4.1% market share from Google. That’s right. From Google!! Why? Because they offer offline maps! In a data starved country like India — offline map access is a major winner. Magic Earth led with this and has been slowly nibbling away at google’s market share in maps.

More familiar names like MapMyIndia, Waze & Route Finder are still trying to gain a foothold with 0.2%, 0.1% & 1.1% of the market respectively.

The trend in Indian Metro’s is more pronounced. Google is still the leader (obviously) but Magic Earth’s market share slightly larger. What’s interesting is that MapMyIndia despite its recent marketing buzz enjoys a very small retail audience — nearly zero as of March 2017.

None of this is surprising if you think about it. Awareness of Maps and their utility is simply larger in Urban areas. We’ve learnt that we can’t leave home without checking traffic conditions first. We’re also hungry for data and looking for bargains.

Using our proprietary data sets — we’ll understand and help you discover the mobile apps and products that India really needs, wants and uses. Stay tuned.

Thanks for your time,
