The most deserving applicant doesn’t always get the job. Sometimes the rich kid with family connections gets the job because his uncle knew someone. If you’re wondering where I’m going with this — I’m talking about browsers — good and bad.
You and I may be using Chrome or FireFox or (god forbid) UC Browser — but that doesn’t mean that these are the browsers we OUGHT to be using.
Puffin is a browser for your mobile device that is insanely fast. Don’t take my word for it. Try it. You can even do that speed test that Airtel thinks young people do . What it does is really quite simple (to explain). They shift the workload from the mobile device to cloud servers. By essentially outsourcing this computing heavy task to the cloud, applications that take up more processing power — run faster on your phone. In fact, Puffin raised over $ 20 Million in its Series A round 2 years ago. They’ve even got a pro version with cloud storage and ad blockers. So why haven’t you heard of it?
Because:
- India is probably not a priority — yet
- No Rich Uncle.
Chrome may or may not be a great browser (debatable) but it has Google’s distribution muscle behind it and that matters.
UC Browser is like the creepy guy at every party who manages to get invited everywhere. After all it has Alibaba standing in its corner.
Firefox is that sweet girl you wanted to date but then you know, no rich uncle. Just kidding — their mobile distribution isn’t nearly as significant as the other players in the market.
Opera Mini’s like the boy next door — patiently playing the long game. They’ve been focused on the Indian market for a while now and their offering in terms of data compression & savings and privacy are pretty cool. They make a lot of sense for the Indian consumer.
The point at the end of the day is this — simply building a great product like Puffin isn’t enough; success lies in distribution. This is where majority of entrepreneurs fail. CAC at scale is never the same as your excel sheet.
