The Apps They Don’t Want You to See

One of the things we don’t realize is that we live in a digital world of Google’s making (and now Facebook too), so the things you see and use are the things that they want you to see and use. Carefully curated through a set of policies and guidelines that ensure the smooth flow of traffic, advertising and money.

As a result of this set of rules though, certain products get banned or removed from the play store. Remarkably, some of these apps though, survive despite the challenge.

TubeMate is an amazing android app that allows you to download videos from Youtube and save them on your phone. That’s pretty amazing for a country where people have limited internet access and plenty of time to kill! YouTube (owned by Google) had plans of its own for offline video. So exit TubeMate.

Earlier this year YouTube launched YouTube Go. Much of TubeMate’s fall coincides with the launch of YouTube go. Despite the ban and launch of YouTube Go, a massive 13% of smartphone users continue to use the app! That kind of demand is hard to come by.

If you search for MIUI Music player online, the top 10 hits you’ll get are links to download the app (none to the play store) and discussion forums with people trying to figure out how to download the app. MIUI music player is an app by XIAOMI that promises users a free of cost music streaming experience! You’re welcome.

Aptiod lets you download and use apps that you’d ordinarily have to pay for. Banned for obvious reasons! Mobdro and TV Portal are pretty cool too. Basically, a free version of Netflix banned for copyright violations. :-(

A lot of these apps are of course available to download from other online stores (remember 9apps?).

Thanks for your time,
