When in Doubt: Educate

For most of India — speaking in English is still an aspirational goal. It divides us in to the haves and the have nots.

Culture Alley’s focus on English learning is paying off. Its reach is an awesome 7%. That number may seem paltry but remember this is 7% of active smartphones in the country. That’s pretty big.

Great User Interfaces & advancements in technology have brought a great many people in to the 21st century. They’ve been able to expand their businesses using WhatsApp & Facebook, book tickets online and are even taking selfies.

We live in a country where engineers who can write great code still struggle to string two sentences together when faced the prospect of having to say something. Not because they don’t know what it is they want to say. They simply don’t want to say it in their broken English.

Their inability to speak the English language keeps them from getting past our receptionists and breaking out beyond the psychological (artificial) shackles imposed by society. This is a problem statement that will persist and really is worth solving. I’m excited about all the ways it can be solved. Imagine the potential that live video & chat apps hold for 1X1 tutoring. Combine this with the emergence of digital wallets & micro payments.

Ping me if anyone is giving out equity for ideas. We got plenty & they’re data driven. ☺

In case you’re wondering about the other companies in this info graphic, I want to emphasize that this is not a chart of competitors. I am not trying to compare Khan Academy’s reach with that of Coursera or Byjus. These are all great companies but each has a different mission. This is simply a snapshot of the ‘space’.

Byjus reach may surprise some of you but remember they charge for their content and are trying to change the way our kids learn. That’s a hotly contested business. Every teacher, over zealous tutor and coaching center is trying to pitch the parents. Byjus can win if it simply pitches to the student.

To my mind Khan Academy and Coursera’s reach is also representative of the effort you have to put in to the platform. They don’t try to spoon feed you, the information’s right there but you have to be willing to make the effort to learn.

Thanks for your time,
